Care in context

Therapy that keeps power, history and survival in the room.

Phoenix Rising centers Black, Brown, queer, trans, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, disabled, immigrant and other Global Majority communities. We understand distress alongside racism, transphobia, ableism, displacement, economic pressure, family systems and healthcare harm, rather than treating every response as evidence that something is wrong with you.

What this means in therapy

Your responses developed for a reason

Hypervigilance, masking, people-pleasing, overworking, shutdown and dissociation can be intelligent responses to environments where safety, belonging, housing, employment or care were conditional. We explore what these responses protected and what your body needs now.

Power and material conditions belong in the conversation

Mental health is shaped by housing, money, work, healthcare, immigration, family, public policy and whose needs are treated as legitimate. Therapy cannot remove every barrier, but it can help name what is happening, reduce isolation and support choices grounded in your actual life.

Care should expand choice, not enforce compliance

We do not measure healing by productivity, eye contact, independence, respectability or how easily you fit into systems that were never built with you in mind. You can question an approach, ask for adaptations, move at a different pace and remain the authority on your own life.

Explore the layers

Where distress takes shape

It takes shape within families, workplaces, schools, healthcare systems, housing, borders, and the histories people inherit. Racism, transphobia, ableism, displacement, poverty, and exclusion can leave the body preparing for danger long after a particular moment has passed.

What conventional care can miss

Too much mental health care asks people to adjust to conditions that continue to harm them. It rewards compliance, treats productivity as proof of wellness, and labels survival responses as symptoms without asking what made those responses necessary.

How Phoenix Rising Centers understands care

Phoenix Rising Centers offers care that keeps the surrounding conditions in view. We understand masking, hypervigilance, shutdown, dissociation, anger, grief, and exhaustion in context. Our work centers relationship over isolation, care over control, and support that expands dignity, agency, and choice.

Who we build care with

We build care with Black and Brown people, queer and trans communities, neurodivergent and disabled people, immigrants, people across the Global Majority, and working-class communities in mind. You do not have to become easier to understand, more productive, or more acceptable before your life is taken seriously here.

What We Specialize In

Care for People
Living Outside the Template

We support trans, queer, neurodivergent, disabled, immigrant, and global majority communities navigating trauma, identity, relationships, embodiment, and systems that were not built with them in mind.

Why Phoenix Rising exists

Our mission

Phoenix Rising Centers exists because traditional systems of mental health care have failed the very communities most impacted by trauma, marginalization, and systemic violence. As providers, we are not neutral participants in these systems. We are part of the movement to dismantle and reimagine them.

Who we are

Our collective includes Black, Brown, queer, trans, disabled, and neurodivergent therapists, including practitioners from immigrant and Global Majority communities. We bring professional training alongside lived experience and understand that identity, culture, power, and survival cannot be separated from mental health.

How we understand our work

Our work is not simply clinical. It is cultural, political, and relational. We practice care as a form of resistance, and therapy as a pathway toward individual and collective liberation.

What shapes healing

Our mission is to provide mental wellness that honors the fullness of who our clients are. We understand that healing does not happen in a vacuum. It is shaped by colonization, white supremacy, capitalism, ableism, and the carceral logic that tells us we must be fixed, quiet, or compliant in order to be well. We reject those frameworks.

What we offer instead

Instead, we offer care that centers dignity, agency, and self-determination. We work alongside our clients, not to pathologize their pain, but to understand it in context. We help reconnect people to ancestral wisdom, community strength, and the right to be seen in their complexity.

    Incredibly impressed

The passion, skills, and intention that PRC manifests around revolutionizing mental health care center from a social justice, anti-racist, and LGBTQIA2S+ informed and affirming framework is crucial to supporting communities who have long been underserved and harmed in the helping professions. I have been incredibly impressed by PRC's tenacity to break ground on fostering models which acknowledge the legacies of power, privilege, and oppression, and actively decolonizing therapeutic spaces, with expansive collaboration for, and by, these resilient communities.”

    Helped and understood me

I was hesitant to seek therapy, but I'm so glad I found Phoenix Rising Centers. As a QTPOC individual, it was incredibly important to me to find a therapist who understood my intersecting experiences and challenges. From the moment I called in, I felt welcomed and understood. The staff was incredibly kind and supportive, and my therapist was truly exceptional. They created a safe and judgment-free space where I could openly discuss my thoughts and feelings without fear of being misunderstood. I've seen significant improvements in my mental health, and I'm so grateful for the support I've received.
